Yesterday I finished decluttering, cleaning and organizing the kitchen. Celebration! Oh wait, there is one more shelf to deal with. I ordered the spices there but forgot to wipe it down. So when I’m done here, I know what I have to do before moving on to the living room.
Decluttering is never done. Something is going to find it’s way in to clutter up life again. I need watch so I can deal with it and not let it pile up.
The same is true spiritually. I need to constantly be vigilant and to keep watch! I need to be on the alert and deal with issues as they arise. I cannot celebrate that I have arrived (until heaven.) This is one reason why I love my time in the Word every morning.
Be of sober spirit, be on the alert.
Your adversary, the devil,
prowls around like a roaring lion,
seeking someone to devour.
1 Peter 5:8
In the morning, O LORD,
You will hear my voice;
In the morning I will order my prayer to You
and eagerly watch.
What really encouraged me today is that I am not alone in keeping watch over my spiritual clutter. Listen to this!
The Lord faithfully helps me keep watch.
Work out your salvation
with fear and trembling;
for it is God who is at work in you,
both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
Philippians 2:12, 13
"I am the LORD, I have called You in righteousness,
I will also hold You by the hand and watch over You.
Isaiah 42:6 (This is spoken to Israel, but the same is true for us.)
Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth;
Keep watch over the door of my lips.
The things my parents taught me from the Bible keep watch over me.
(This makes me smile. If you’re a parent this is a great reason to teach your children.)
observe the commandment of your father
And do not forsake the teaching of your mother…
When you walk about,
they will guide you;
When you sleep,
they will watch over you;
And when you awake,
they will talk to you.
The elders keep watch over me.
Obey your leaders and submit to them,
for they keep watch over your souls
as those who will give an account.
Let them do this with joy and not with grief,
for this would be unprofitable for you.
Tuesday, when I spent 4 hours taking my refrigerator apart and cleaning every surface, I was flagging, wondering why I was doing this crazy project. Just at the height of my discouragement, Craig came in the door and stepped in and started working with me. He didn’t ask, can I help? He just started working. He helped me over the finish line and set my heart rejoicing.
Today, as you keep watch over your spiritual life, know that God is for you! And He has given others to help. Press on! Keep getting rid of the spiritual clutter! Do you have a shelf that needs wiping down? Go do it now!
More than anything I would like to encourage you in your walk with God!
