Remember what Amalek did to you along the way
when you came out from Egypt,
how he met you along the way
and attacked among you all the stragglers at your rear
when you were faint and weary;
and he did not fear God.
Therefore it shall come about when the LORD your God
has given you rest from all your surrounding enemies,
in the land which the LORD your God gives you
as an inheritance to possess,
you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven;
you must not forget.
They must not forget… who was Amalek? I remember Amalek from Exodus 17. There was a battle. There was a great but temporary victory.
Amalek is a picture of the flesh. If you are a believer in the Lord Jesus, you have an enemy. It’s your own flesh. Your old nature. If the flesh has its way it will kill you. Knowing your enemy is important so that you can have victory over it. This is what Bill MacDonald says about Amalek. It’s so good!
“Amalek, a descendant of Esau, is a type of the flesh—that is, the evil, corrupt, Adamic nature of man. Observe the following parallels between the flesh and Amalek: (1) It presents itself after the Holy Spirit is given at conversion to fight against the Spirit; (2) The LORD will have war with the flesh from generation to generation; (3) It is never eradicated from the believer till death or the Rapture of the church. (4) Two means of triumph over the flesh are suggested—prayer and the Word.”
The call today is to be very aware of this enemy, you own flesh, and say “NO!” to it’s evil.
For I know that nothing good dwells in me,
that is, in my flesh;
for the willing is present in me,
but the doing of the good is not.
So then, brethren, we are under obligation,
not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh--
for if you are living according to the flesh,
you must die;
but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body,
you will live.
For all who are being led by the Spirit of God,
these are sons of God.
But if you bite and devour one another,
take care that you are not consumed by one another.
But I say, walk by the Spirit,
and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.
For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit,
and the Spirit against the flesh;
for these are in opposition to one another,
so that you may not do the things that you please.
But if you are led by the Spirit,
you are not under the Law.
Now the deeds of the flesh are evident,
outbursts of anger,
and things like these,
of which I forewarn you,
just as I have forewarned you,
that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
That is one ugly list! This is a great day to walk by the Spirit and not fulfill the deeds of the flesh.
I must not forget the evil of my flesh as long as I live! My dad used to say, "The flesh is never dead until it's six feet under." The war is on!
Thank you, Lord, for your Spirit!
More than anything I would like to encourage you in your walk with God!
