This morning I’m sitting in the airport reading my Bible as we leave for the Bahamas. Wonderful meditations! And so appropriate for our trip!
The LORD said to Gideon, "The people who are with you are too many for Me to give Midian into their hands, for Israel would become boastful, saying, 'My own power has delivered me.'
Gideon’s first battle is quite amazing. God reduces his army twice and he ends up with only 300 men against 135,000. Ok, that’s scary! Why? So that the surpassing greatness of the power is of God not of him!
I have to note how sweet God is to give Gideon courage by letting him overhear a conversation of the enemy. Read the chapter! It’s great. Then the time came to fight! What will happen?
He divided the 300 men into three companies, and he put trumpets and empty pitchers into the hands of all of them, with torches inside the pitchers. He said to them, "Look at me and do likewise. And behold, when I come to the outskirts of the camp, do as I do. "When I and all who are with me blow the trumpet, then you also blow the trumpets all around the camp and say, 'For the LORD and for Gideon.'" Judges 7:16-18
What weapons of war! Trumpets and empty pitchers with torches inside!
The commentary on this is in the New Testament.
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves;
I love it! Love it! Love it!!!!! Because that's us. Earthen vessels that carry the treasure, Christ!
God uses weak things. Broken things. So that His glory will be seen. There’s no way they could have won that battle without the Lord. The power is of God and not of ourselves! Wonderful news! There’s only boasting in Him!
It reminded me of this song:
Earthen vessels, marred, unsightly,
More than anything I would like to encourage you in your walk with God!
