Elijah came near to all the people and said,
"How long will you hesitate between two opinions?
If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him."
But the people did not answer him a word.
1 Kings 18:21
I Kings 18 is one of my favorite chapters in the Bible. It’s the showdown between the real God and the false prophets of Baal. I remember listening to the chapter with dramatized reading as a child. I loved it! God wins! (I like being on the winning team, don’t you?)
You have to read it! Two altars. Two sacrifices. Whose God would consume the sacrifice with fire? To get Baal’s attention the people cried and lept and cut themselves for hours. So much drama. No fire. Nothing happened. Elijah taunted them…
It came about at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, "Call out with a loud voice, for he is a god; either he is occupied or gone aside, or is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and needs to be awakened." 1 Kings 18:27 (I love that!)
Elijah's turn. He repaired the altar of the Lord. He chose 12 stones for the 12 tribes, doused the altar with water to make it really really hard for God. Then he prayed. So different from the frantic behavior of the prophets of Baal. Repair. Building. Praying. There’s a lesson there!
Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, "The LORD, He is God; the LORD, He is God."1 Kings 18:38,39
God is the true God. The only God. It was true then. It is true today. The battle rages between God, the Living God, and the false gods. There really is no contest. God wins!
Do you know Him? He gave His Son the Lord Jesus to die for your sin and give you eternal life. Don’t hesitate. Trust Him! If you say you know Him, do you follow Him? To waste your time following false gods is shear madness! If the Lord is God, follow Him!
More than anything I would like to encourage you in your walk with God!
