Judges 6:13 records Gideon's questions to God:
"If the LORD is with us, why then has all this happened to us?
And where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about?...
But now the LORD has abandoned us."
Are there really no stupid questions? We all ask stupid questions, and we sometimes make stupid conclusions. Gideon illustrates this.
Stupid Conclusion: "The Lord has abandoned us!"
If the Lord had abandoned Israel, why was the Angel of the Lord talking to Gideon?
Stupid Question #1: "Why has all this happened to us?" Why me???:
Deuteronomy 29:24-27 "All the nations will say, 'Why has the LORD done thus to this land? Why this great outburst of anger?' Then men will say, 'Because they forsook the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt. They went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods whom they have not known and whom He had not allotted to them. Therefore, the anger of the LORD burned against that land, to bring upon it every curse which is written in this book.'''
Why ask why? The answer was written by Moses four hundred year before the problem. The answer to Gideon's why is, "Read your Bible." That is the answer to every one of my why questions too. If you are with a "consuming fire" you should not ask, "Why am I a being consumed?" You should ask, "Why have I not been consumed?"
Stupid Question #2: Where are all His miracles?
Would a miracle make you read your Bible and discover the answers that God has already written? Abraham told the very dead rich man in Luke 16, if they don't listen to Moses and the prophets, they aren't going to listen if someone rises from the dead.
Israel did not need a miracle. They needed the Word of God and Obedience. 99.9% of the time the same is true for each of us. We need the Word of God and we need Obedience.
What did we learn about stupid questions? I learned that God was very gracious to answer Gideon. "If any man lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all man generously and without reproach." He is very open to everyone who opens to Him. I also learned that God very patiently redirects us to the Word of God, and shows us what we should already have known. I learned that God helps us through circumstances in life that are intended to help us correct our conclusions, and be changed into the image of His Son.
For me to live is Christ.
