To the Lord!
I have been thinking about the altar of the two and a half tribes that almost caused a civil war in Israel. I thought of several problems with the altar, but not until later this morning did I really nail it. What is the root problem with this altar? It was built without counseling the Levites or considering the Scripture. It was a novel idea not a biblical creation, but what is the root of it?
"When they [the two and one-half tribe] came to the region of the Jordan which is in the land of Canaan, the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh BUILT AN ALTAR there by the Jordan, a large altar in appearance."
Then I thought, "How does this altar differ from the other good altars of the Bible?" The difference is that the first altar and all the altars leading up to the altar of the tabernacle were "to the Lord." Noah built the first altar of the Bible "to the Lord." Abraham built the next altars of the Bible "to the Lord"!
So I reread Joshua 22, and asked the question, "To whom or what did the two and a half tribes build their altar?"
"But truly we have done this OUT OF CONCERN, for a reason, saying, 'In time to come your sons may say to our sons, 'What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?'"
They did not build their altar TO THE LORD. They built their altar to their concerns!!!! They also built the altar not to God or for God, but to the brothers and for themselves.
To whom have you built the memorials of your life? Have you built memorials to your concerns, memorials for other Christian to see, or are building memorials to the Lord.
To the Lord!
For me to live is Christ.
