Deborah sang a victory song, because Israel won a war against King Sisera. In her song, Deborah lists who helped and who did not help. All God's people did not participate. Some were very selfish. Some loved their own lives. Some loved their own things. Others like the tribe of Naphtali despised their own lives even to death. They counted their own lives to be nothing compared to the rest of God's people.
Read Deborah's song. What do you see?
"Gilead remained across the Jordan;
And why did Dan stay in ships?
Asher sat at the seashore, And remained by its landings.
Zebulun was a people who despised their lives even to death,
And Naphtali also, on the high places of the field….
The Stars fought from heaven,
From their courses they fought against Sisera…
'Curse Meroz,' said the angel of the LORD,
'Utterly curse its inhabitants;
Because they did not come to the help of the LORD,
To the help of the LORD against the warriors.'
Most blessed of women is Jael, The wife of Heber the Kenite;
Most blessed is she of women in the tent."
People act shamefully today too. Christians desert the Lord's battle to live their own lives. They let others do the battle of evangelism, the teaching, the sacrifices, the praying. Gilead chose to live far from people of God, and then he made his distance an excuse for not helping. Christians sit by the sea and collect sea shells like Asher, and they sail their own business ships like Dan. Their business is more important to them than the business of God. Others have health concerns. They are not like Zebulun who thought that the well-being of the people of God was more important his own health. Like Meroz, they read self-help books but refuse to lift a finger for the Lord and His people. They are not like Jael; they refuse to spill blood on their own carpets. Their houses are clean, safe and far far away from the battles of Jehovah.
God won the battle in spite of Israel's deserters. When God's people did not come, He called the stars (angels) of heaven to help. Then He made a list.
God records this song of Deborah to help us to understand the return of Jesus. This is not a list of saved or lost people. This is a record of reward for God's own people. God is making a list; the list will become a song, and the song will be sung. There is a verse in this song with your name in it. How would you like your name to be sung for all eternity?
Your choice. Start writing a really great stanza in this song with your own name. Be a Zebulun. Be Naphtali. Be a Jael. But don't be a __________ .
For me to live is Christ.
