Gideon told Israel in Judges 8:23:
But Gideon said to them,
"I will not rule over you,
nor shall my son rule over you;
the LORD shall rule over you."
Jesus tells you today in Matthew 23:8-10:
But do not be called Rabbi (or Teacher);
For ONE IS YOUR TEACHER, and you are all brothers.
Do not call anyone on earth your father;
For ONE IS YOUR FATHER, He who is in heaven.
Do not be called leaders;
for ONE IS YOUR LEADER, that is, Christ.
Brother, don't call your church leaders Teacher.
Sister, don't call your church leaders Father.
Brother, don't call your church leaders, Leader (or Reverend or anything like it).
Men teach in the church. Men are fathers in the church. Men lead in the church. But teaching, fathering and leading are jobs to do, not titles to put in front of the names of men.
Call Christians "brother" or "sister," and everyone will see and hear that we are a family, and that God is our Teacher (Thara), Ruler, Father, and Reverend.
Do you see the difference between honoring men and giving men the honor that belongs to God? Respect your brothers and sisters who lead and teach, but do not give them the honor that is for God. Gideon wanted the world to watch Israel and learn that God was their Ruler, not man. Jesus wants the world to watch the church and learn that God is our Ruler, not man.
Brother, will you obey Jesus?
For me to live is Christ.
