Why should Nabal give David anything? It was all his own stuff! Why share?
Nabal refuses to give to David and his men.
"Shall I [Nabal] then take my bread and my water and my meat
that I have slaughtered for my shearers,
and give it to men whose origin I do not know?"
1 Samuel 25:11
Two reasons why Nabal should give to David:
First, Nabal should give so that he will be like God. God gives to the poor and strangers.
He [the Lord] executes justice for the orphan and the widow,
and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing.
So show your love for the alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.
Second, Nabal should give because God commanded him to give.
You shall say before the LORD your God, "I have removed the sacred portion from my house, and also have given it to the Levite and the alien, the orphan and the widow, according to all Your commandments…"
Nabal's name means "fool" in Hebrew. Some people live up to their names. Nabal lived down to his name. Nabal should have extended generous open-handed hospitality to David for the same reason we should be hospitable today. First, we want to be like Christ. Second we want to be obedient.
Like Nabal, we must make a decision. We must decide what we will do with the home and resources given to us by God. Don't be a Nabal! There are already too many Nabals! Be generous like Christ. Live up to your name, Christian.
They only asked us to remember the poor-- the very thing I also was eager to do.
For me to live is Christ.
