The four best leaders in the history of Israel---Moses, Joshua, David and Jesus--were almost executed by stoning by their own people! Were they bad leaders? No! The problem is that good leaders were leading bad people. God does not call His own people "sheep" because we are cute and fluffy. God calls us sheep because we easily wander away and want our own way. This is true for saved and unsaved people.
Israel also stoned bad people. If people are throwing rocks at you, it does not mean you a good leader. You may be a bad person. However, if you are a good leader, you can expect that you will be the target of some rocks during your time of leadership. Leaders lead God's people where they do not want to go, through waterless deserts, into hostile countries, into warfare, into unimaginably new areas of thinking. Leaders are required by God to look beyond the impossibility to the reward, and then lead others to follow them through those hardships all the way to the goal.
For me to live is Christ.
