2 Chronicles 16:12
In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa became diseased in his feet. His disease was severe, yet even in his disease he did not seek the LORD, but the physicians.
2 Chronicles 16:9
For the eyes of the LORD move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His. You have acted foolishly in this. Indeed, from now on you will surely have wars.
It is easier for a young person to trust the Lord, because young people have a diminished sense of loss. If God does not come through, the young person has the rest of his life to recover from the loss. An older person who leans completely on the Lord has a heightened sense of loss. When an older person stakes his life's energies and life savings in the will of God, he has no margin for error. He is walking a tightrope without a net. There is no "rest of his life" to recover.
The two men of faith that I admire most are George Mueller and Abraham.
Abraham "grew strong in faith" according to God. God carried Abraham from a misplaced trust in Ishmael to an invest-all-or nothing faith in God for Isaac during the closing years of his life. God did not make the tests lighter for Abraham to accommodate the weakness of his senior years, and Abraham rose to the occasion. He proved that the man who trusts God in his senior years is not disappointed.
George Mueller began his Christian life with an immature impetuous faith. He even bought a lottery ticket to test the will of God as a young person. His faith matured, however, and continued to be a whole life investment. According to one source, "the assets of Mr. Mueller at the time of his death were, and this includes his furniture, one hundred and sixty pounds. In other words, perhaps by our money maybe fifteen hundred dollars or two thousand dollars." George Mueller lived and died with all his strength and all his assets invested in God.
Neither man had a hedge for old age. Both men matured over a life of trust in God. Both ended with all their treasures laid up for them in heaven. Do I want to be an Asa or an Abraham?
For me to live is Christ.
