Jehoiada, the priest, was honored to be buried among the kings of Judah. Jehoiada was not a king, but he rescued Joash the young boy king from death and raised him as his own son. But what return did Joash give to Jehoiada for his kindness?
2 Chronicles 24:16-18
They buried him [Jehoiada, a priest] in the city of David among the kings, because he had done well in Israel and to God and His house. But after the death of Jehoiada the officials of Judah came and bowed down to the king [Joash], and the king listened to them. They abandoned the house of the LORD, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherim and the idols; so wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their guilt.
Jehoiada poured his life into the boy, but he had poured water into sand! Joash was as easily influenced for evil as he was for good. Not only did Joash abandon the godly training of Jehoiada, he also murdered Jehoiada's son.
Maybe you have poured your life into a disappointment. Solomon says you are not the first man to hand over your wisdom and hard work to a fool, and you won't be the last.
Thus I hated all the fruit of my labor
for which I had labored under the sun,
for I must leave it to the man who will come after me.
And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool?
Yet he will have control over all the fruit of my labor
for which I have labored by acting wisely under the sun.
This too is vanity [empty effort].
Only under the sun on earth does the sacrifice of your life have no value. Heaven rejoices. "Well done, you good and faithful servant!" Jesus Himself stands to receive you, and then girds Himself to serve you. He is coming quickly and His reward is with Him. No life has been forgotten. Your labors are not water on sand. You have laid up gold on the shores of heaven.
For me to live is Christ.
