Here are two good looking kids, Esther and Daniel:
Esther 2:9-10 Esther a refugee in Persia
Now the young lady [Esther] pleased him and found favor with him. So he quickly provided her with her cosmetics and food, gave her seven choice maids from the king's palace and transferred her and her maids to the best place in the harem. Esther did not make known her people or her kindred, for Mordecai had instructed her that she should not make them known.
Daniel 1:8 Daniel a refugee in Babylon
But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the king's choice food or with the wine which he drank; so he sought permission from the commander of the officials that he might not defile himself.
Daniel and Esther were refugee young people from Israel who were taken into the court of Gentile kings. They both were picked because they were the best looking youths in their kingdoms, one young man and one young woman. Both eventually were raised to share the throne with a king.
Daniel and Esther are also different in many ways. Daniel did not hide his Jewish origin. Esther hid her Jewish origin. Daniel did not eat the king's food that the Law of Moses and conscience prohibited. Esther ate the king's food. Daniel did not violate the marriage laws of Moses, and Esther did violate the marriage laws of Moses.
Are you surprised that both Daniel and Esther were used by God? I am.
God used Daniel because he was a clean vessel. He was careful, obedient and fearless. God used Daniel because of who Daniel was. God used Daniel to show us what God will do with a believer who will fearlessly serve God without compromising obedience.
I don't want to say anything bad about Esther. She is a hero. She was obedient to her uncle. She loved the people of God. She acted in spite of fearfulness. She has so much to commend her, and she was beautiful, but she was not Bible centered. God used Esther in spite of who she was. He used Esther to show that God can use the weakest and least likely tool. Esther shows how great God is.
Your good looks will only get you so far. Obedience to Gods' word will carry all the way through life. Daniel was mightily used by God when he was young and good looking, but he also used in a greater way when he was old and wrinkled. Esther was used when she was young, but nothing is said of the old wrinkled Esther.
I am old and wrinkled, and I want to end well. If I end well, it won't be by my good looks. It will be by obedience to the Word of God. Now is the time to choose how you will live your life for God. What kind of life will carry you through old age and across the finish line with victory?
For me to live is Christ.
