1 Chronicles 22:5-6 David Charges Solomon
David said, "My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house that is to be built for the LORD shall be exceedingly magnificent, famous and glorious throughout all lands. Therefore now I will make preparation for it." So David made ample preparations before his death. Then he called for his son Solomon, and charged him to build a house for the LORD God of Israel.
David gave his son the materials to succeed. He charged him to do the work. He raised Solomon to be a servant of God for a great and eternal work.
2 Timothy 2:1-2; 4:1-2 Paul Charges Timothy
You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also…I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.
Paul raised Timothy as a son and as a servant of God. He gave him the materials to succeed. He charged him to do to a great and eternal work.
David and Paul did not live trivial lives, and they did not expect their sons to live trivial lives. Trivial means "of little value or importance." They did not raise their sons to live for Self! Both fathers wore themselves out for the kingdom of God, and they prepared their sons to do the same thing.
Are you charging your children to work for God? Are persuading them that they are caught up in a great eternal work for God? Are you laying up materials for their success, or are you preparing them for nothing? By your preparation, what is ahead for your children, a life of eternal purpose or a life of trivial pursuit?
1 Chronicles 21:24 King David
But King David said to Ornan, "No, but I will surely buy it for the full price; for I will not take what is yours for the LORD, or offer a burnt offering which costs me nothing."
Mark 12:43-44 A Poor Widow
Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, "Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury; for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on."
2 Corinthians 8:1-2 A Poor Church in Macedonia
Now, brethren, we wish to make known to you the grace of God which has been given in the churches of Macedonia, that in a great ordeal of affliction their abundance of joy and their deep poverty overflowed in the wealth of their liberality.
Romans 12:1 You
Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
What has it cost you to give yourself and your things to God?
For me to live is Christ.
