If Your law had not been my delight,
Then I would have perished in my affliction.
I’m noticing all the affliction verses, it seems. How does one navigate through affliction? Delight in the Word of God! Stop and think of this. There is something to delight in during affliction. The affliction isn’t delightful but God speaks wonderful things through His word right to the heart! Now that is delightful!
I was reminded of these verses:
How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand in the path of sinners,
Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water,
Which yields its fruit in its season
And its leaf does not wither;
And in whatever he does, he prospers.
All Your commandments are faithful;
They have persecuted me with a lie; help me!
So many hard things happen in life. One of them is people lying about you.
My word for the week from Sunday is “Help Me!” I’m glad I was reminded of this today!
On Sunday someone shared this about the Lord Jesus.
For the Lord GOD helps Me, Therefore, I am not disgraced;
Therefore, I have set My face like flint,
And I know that I will not be ashamed.
Behold, the Lord GOD helps Me;
Who is he who condemns Me?
Behold, they will all wear out like a garment;
The moth will eat them.
This is the Lord’s prayer… help me!
And God did! The same is true for us. We cry for help. He helps!
This could be my most often prayed prayer!
Who is among you that fears the LORD,
That obeys the voice of His servant,
That walks in darkness and has no light?
Let him trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God.
I love these truths!
I know, O LORD, that Your judgments are righteous,
And that in faithfulness You have afflicted me.
O may Your lovingkindness comfort me,
According to Your word to Your servant.
Psalm 119:75, 76
God’s ways are right. He uses the afflictions in life to mold and make me. And He does it in faithfulness. He can be trusted. These circumstances aren’t random. Isn’t that marvelous? And yet I need comfort. So in mercy He sends His word to comfort me.
Wonderful wonderful friend!
Before I was afflicted I went astray,
But now I keep Your word.
It is good for me that I was afflicted,
That I may learn Your statutes.
Affliction doesn’t feel good, but it is good! Here are 2 reasons. It keeps us clinging to the Lord if we respond correctly. We wander off so easily, but affliction brings us back!
It teaches me God’s word in ways I would have missed. God is causing these things to work together for good.
Isn’t that a great reminder? I’m thankful!
The law of Your mouth is better to me
Than thousands of gold and silver pieces.
The LORD is my portion;
The Lord is my inheritance. I love this fact! No matter what happens in my life, I have a treasure that goes beyond possessions. I have God as my possession! Wonderful!
This caused me to turn to these verses today…
Therefore, Levi does not have a portion or inheritance with his brothers;
the LORD is his inheritance, just as the LORD your God spoke to him.
The LORD is the portion of my inheritance and my cup;
You support my lot.
I cried out to You, O LORD; I said,
"You are my refuge, My portion in the land of the living.”
"The LORD is my portion," says my soul, "Therefore I have hope in Him."
Whom have I in heaven but You?
And besides You, I desire nothing on earth.
My flesh and my heart may fail,
But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Psalm 73:25, 26
Remember the word to Your servant,
In which You have made me hope.
This is my comfort in my affliction,
That Your word has revived me.
Psalm 119:49, 50
I have remembered Your ordinances from of old, O LORD,
And comfort myself.
Your statutes are my songs In the house of my pilgrimage.
Where can you find hope, comfort, revival and a song?
The Word of God! I guess we should live there then.
What a treasure. Thank you, Lord!
I have a wonderful treasure.
The gift of God without measure.
We will travel together
My Bible and I.
And I will walk at liberty, For I seek Your precepts.
We tend to think that freedom is doing whatever we want. It’s not true!
Real freedom comes in obeying God’s word. You know the story about the kite who wanted to fly without being attached to that horrible string. Once freed from the string it crashed. So with us! Real freedom comes in staying tied to the Bible!
This is one of the many reasons I love the Bible! So I say with David...
I shall delight in Your commandments, Which I love.
And I shall lift up my hands to Your commandments, Which I love;
And I will meditate on Your statutes.
LOVE LOVE LOVE!
My soul cleaves to the dust;
Revive me according to Your word.
My soul weeps because of grief;
Strengthen me according to Your word.
Life has its ups and downs. I’ve found that the Word is the only real thing that revives me. The comfort from God is so real and so near. We are packing up our house to get it ready to sell. I came here 12 years ago to care for Mumsy. She is in heaven now and God is moving us on. Yesterday a few waves of grief washed over me as I was working. And then there was the comfort from God. Wonderful, sweet, sweet friend. How can I help but love Him? I love what Bill MacDonald says:
In the dark spots of life, when our soul melts in tears, the God of all comfort bends low and often with a single verse of Scripture lifts us and strengthens us to go on.
I love the Bible for so many reasons… some are found in my Bible reading today.
Open my eyes, that I may behold
Wonderful things from Your law.
1. The Bible is full of wonderful things. It’s like a treasure hunt every time I open it!
My soul is crushed with longing
After Your ordinances at all times.
2, The Bible is something to long after. What a desire David had!
Even though princes sit and talk against me,
Your servant meditates on Your statutes.
3. The Word is a comfort in trial and meditating on it instead of the trial is a great help!
Your testimonies also are my delight;
They are my counselors.
4. The Word is such a delight! And such a counsel. Both of those things make me happy.
I love the Word of God!
With all my heart I have sought You;
Do not let me wander from Your commandments.
Your word I have treasured in my heart,
That I may not sin against You.
A few things strike me today.
1. I need to seek the Lord with ALL my heart. Not part of my heart. Not just Sunday or when it suits me. ALL my heart. ALL the time.
2. God’s word is treasure! I need to value it like treasure.
3. God’s word keeps me from wandering and keeps me from sin.
This is a great personal prayer. I’m praying and treasuring this today.
More than anything I would like to encourage you in your walk with God!
