I love 1 Timothy! There are so many practical instructions for different groups of people. Today we are back to women. See an earlier blog on women.
Having a reputation for good works;
and if she has brought up children,
if she has shown hospitality to strangers,
if she has washed the saints' feet,
if she has assisted those in distress,
and if she has devoted herself to every good work.
1 Timothy 5:10
What kinds of things should characterize a believing woman’s life?
This one verse talks about a widow who has lived a life for God. It is a beautiful picture of qualities every believing woman should pursue!
A reputation for good works= not only does she do good things, but is known for it.
Brought up children= not just had children, but taught them how to act, to love the Lord.
Shown hospitality to strangers= hospitable to people she doesn’t even know. The Bible talks a lot about us being hospitable!
Washed the saint’s feet= I love William MacDonald here:
"Washing the feet of visitors was the duty of a slave. So here the thought doubtless is that the widow has performed very menial services for her fellow Christians. But it might also mean to have washed the saints' feet in a spiritual way, with the washing of water by the word. This would not mean public ministry, but simply visiting in homes and using the word of God in such a way as to cleanse believers from defilement contracted in their daily walk."
Assisted those in distress= Helped people who are suffering in some way.
Devoted to every good work= pursued good works.
The thing I love about this woman is that she is not self centered, she is others centered. This goes against our culture and our nature! What a good reminder as I start my day today! I want to be devoted to the right things! You?
Let no one look down on your youthfulness,
but rather in speech,
show yourself an example of those who believe.
I Timothy 4:12
Calling all youth! God wants you to be an example of the believers. When people look at you they should see what living for the Lord is like. Paul gives 5 areas that cover pretty much everything in life.
Speech= what you talk about. Is it glorifying to the Lord. If not, don’t say it!
Conduct= what you do. Does your behavior honor God?
Love= are you loving the Lord with all your heart and loving people for whom Christ died.
Faith= are you trusting God with your life? Can He trust you?
Purity= are you morally clean? This includes sexual purity and having a clean heart and mind.
Be an example of the believers. Today in school. Today at work. Today in everything you do. Show off Jesus!
I thought I’d focus on the verse about women in 1 Timothy 3.
Women must likewise be dignified,
not malicious gossips, but temperate, faithful in all things.
1 Timothy 3:11
Dignified= someone who is respected
Not malicious gossip= someone who doesn’t slander others
Temperate=someone well balanced
Faithful in all things= someone who is completely trustworthy
Be like Jesus. That is a great goal for the day!
And on a another note, God is giving me songs about Him being King this week. I woke up today singing this song. and it blessed me, so I am sharing it with you.
O worship the King all-glorious above,
O gratefully sing his power and his love:
our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days,
pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise.
O tell of his might and sing of his grace,
whose robe is the light, whose canopy space.
His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form,
and dark is his path on the wings of the storm.
Your bountiful care, what tongue can recite?
It breathes in the air, it shines in the light;
it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain,
and sweetly distills in the dew and the rain.
Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,
in you do we trust, nor find you to fail.
Your mercies, how tender, how firm to the end,
our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend!
O measureless Might, unchangeable Love,
whom angels delight to worship above!
Your ransomed creation, with glory ablaze,
in true adoration shall sing to your praise!
I think King worshipers are people God transforms into being dignified,
not malicious gossips, but temperate, faithful in all things. That’s what I want to be!
A King worshiper and a transformed woman!
First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers,
petitions and thanksgivings,
be made on behalf of all men,
for kings and all who are in authority,
so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.
This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,
who desires all men to be saved
and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
1 Timothy 2:1
Today is a good day to pray.
Who do we pray for? Everyone. All those in authority.
Why? So that we can live a calm and quiet life for God.
Why? So that people will be saved!
For there is one God,
and one mediator also between God and men,
the man Christ Jesus,
who gave Himself as a ransom for all
1 Timothy 2: 5, 6
Whatever you do today, pray.
Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God,
be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
1 Timothy 1:17
Today I’m rejoicing in the KING!
Eternal… He is without end. The beginning and the end!
Immortal…Living forever. Never dying. Never decaying.
Invisible…Not able to be seen.
The only God… There are no others. He is God alone!
To HIM be honor and glory forever and ever! AMEN!
What made Paul burst into this praise? He was thinking about the way God saved him.
Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners,
among whom I am foremost of all.
Yet for this reason I found mercy,
so that in me as the foremost,
Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience
as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life.
1 Timothy 1:15,16
I found mercy.
Now to the King!
…for not all have faith.
But the Lord is faithful,
and He will strengthen and protect you
from the evil one.
2 Thessalonians 3:3
God’s faithfulness has been a theme for me this week.
Faithful= God will never lie. He can be trusted in everything. He is true to His word.
This is so wonderful! I thought I would think about some related verses.
Know therefore that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God.
Your faithfulness continues throughout all generations.
God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.
1 Corinthians 1:9
Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.
No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man;
and God is faithful,
who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able,
but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also,
so that you will be able to endure it.
1 Corinthians 10:12, 13
If we confess our sins,
He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9
What a faithful Friend. That makes me sing a little Selah.
2 Thessalonians 2 is a glimpse ahead. Who doesn’t want to know the future? Read it!
A few highlights of what is coming from this chapter:
The apostasy…falling away from the truth.
The man of lawlessness revealed who displays himself as being God.
The man’s activity is powered by Satan with power and signs and false miracles.
The Restrainer, the Holy Spirit, who is restraining now will be removed.
People will believe what is false because they didn’t believe the truth.
Jesus will end the chaos with the breath of His mouth and His appearance.
Paul says this spirit of lawlessness was already at work in his day. His day! What about our day? Oh yes! So what should we do? What? Panic? Hide? Try to change these events? That’s foolish…God says it’s coming. So what do we do?
So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught,
whether by word of mouth or by letter from us.
Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself
and God our Father,
who has loved us
and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace,
comfort and strengthen your hearts
in every good work and word.
2 Thessalonians 2:15-17
We should stand firm and hold to the Bible!
Are you reading and studying your Bible?
Come to know God in His word. Come to understand God’s purposes and working in history. Take your stand there. Don’t fall away from truth yourself!
Then what? Work! God will strengthen and comfort you in those two things…
every good work and word!
Now let’s get to it!
The Bible stands though the hills may tumble,
It will firmly stand when the earth shall crumble;
I will plant my feet on its firm foundation,
For the Bible stands.
…When the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven
with His mighty angels in flaming fire,
dealing out retribution to those who do not know God
and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction,
away from the presence of the Lord
and from the glory of His power,
when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day,
and to be marveled at among all who have believed--
for our testimony to you was believed.
To this end also we pray for you always,
that our God will count you worthy of your calling,
and fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith with power,
so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you,
and you in Him,
according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Thessalonians 1:9-12
So many important truths in these verses!
The Lord Jesus will come back in judgment.
There will be eternal destruction for those who won’t believe.
Believe now! Trust Him now! If you have questions…ask please!
He will be glorified in and marveled at by those who believe.
Think about YOUR future.
This world is temporary. Live for what is eternal.
Don’t waste your precious life!
Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.
Today I’m rejoicing that the Lord is absolutely trustworthy in all His ways. Every promise of His will come true. He can’t lie or change His mind. If He says it, it is a done deal! Hallelujah!
Know therefore that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God.
The Rock! His work is perfect, For all His ways are just;
A God of faithfulness and without injustice,
Righteous and upright is He.
The LORD'S lovingkindnesses indeed never cease,
For His compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.
God is faithful,
through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.
1 Corinthians 1:9
If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.
2 Timothy 2:13
Jesus Christ, the faithful witness.
I love Him! I owe my life to this faithful One!
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again,
even so God will bring with Him
those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.
For this we say to you by the word of the Lord,
that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord,
will not precede those who have fallen asleep.
For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout,
with the voice of the archangel
and with the trumpet of God,
and the dead in Christ will rise first.
Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up
together with them in the clouds
to meet the Lord in the air,
and so we shall always be with the Lord.
Therefore comfort one another with these words.
1 Thessalonians 4:14-18
I am looking forward to this day! It could be today!
The Lord Himself is coming . Caught up! Forever with the Lord! Comfort.
So how should we live today? He describes it earlier in the chapter.
Finally then, brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus,
that as you received from us instruction as to how you ought to walk
and please God (just as you actually do walk),
that you excel still more.
For you know what commandments we gave you
by the authority of the Lord Jesus.
For this is the will of God, your sanctification;
that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality;
1 Thessalonians 4:1-3
Let's live and please Him today. We may meet Him this afternoon!
More than anything I would like to encourage you in your walk with God!
