Draw near, O nations, to hear; and listen, O peoples!
Let the earth and all it contains hear, and the world and all that springs from it.
For the LORD'S indignation is against all the nations,
And His wrath against all their armies;
He has utterly destroyed them,
He has given them over to slaughter.
So their slain will be thrown out,
And their corpses will give off their stench,
And the mountains will be drenched with their blood.
And all the host of heaven will wear away,
And the sky will be rolled up like a scroll;
All their hosts will also wither away As a leaf withers from the vine,
Or as one withers from the fig tree.
There is coming a day of judgment. Just because God is patient now, doesn’t mean His patience will last forever.
The Lord is not slow about His promise,
as some count slowness,
but is patient toward you,
not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief,
in which the heavens will pass away with a roar
and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat,
and the earth and its works will be burned up.
Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way,
what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,
looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God,
because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning,
and the elements will melt with intense heat!
2 Peter 3:9-12
God doesn’t want you to perish! He is patiently waiting for you to be saved.
Are you saved? What sort of people ought we to be?
Looking forward to eternal realities.
And the work of righteousness will be peace,
And the service of righteousness, quietness and confidence forever.
This is in reference to a coming day when Jesus will reign and things will be wonderful. Read the beginning of this chapter. But it is true today on a personal level. My dad loved this verse. Maybe that's why I like it so much.
When you live for and serve the Lord there is personal peace and quietness and confidence. Isn’t that wonderful? Live for righteousness today! (If you aren't at rest, perhaps you are living for the wrong thing!)
Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help
And rely on horses,
And trust in chariots because they are many
And in horsemen because they are very strong,
But they do not look to the Holy One of Israel, nor seek the LORD!
Now the Egyptians are men and not God,
And their horses are flesh and not spirit;
So the LORD will stretch out His hand,
And he who helps will stumble
And he who is helped will fall,
And all of them will come to an end together.
Return to Him from whom you have deeply defected,
O sons of Israel.
Need help? Go to God! Anything else is deep defection.
"Woe to the rebellious children," declares the LORD,
"Who execute a plan, but not Mine,
And make an alliance, but not of My Spirit, In order to add sin to sin;
Who proceed down to Egypt Without consulting Me,
To take refuge in the safety of Pharaoh
And to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt!
"Therefore the safety of Pharaoh will be your shame
And the shelter in the shadow of Egypt, your humiliation.
The warnings in scripture are good! This stood out to me today because I’m studying Ruth. Naomi and her husband left Bethlehem (house of bread) to take shelter in Moab because of a famine. It wasn’t a good idea. In Moab her husband and two sons died. But Naomi went back. Good things happened when she returned.
Think about God’s plans, not mine.
Take refuge in Him.
Thanks Lord! I needed that!
It’s hard to share just one brief thought from this chapter but I will.
But when he sees his children, the work of My hands, in his midst,
They will sanctify My name;
Indeed, they will sanctify the Holy One of Jacob
And will stand in awe of the God of Israel.
Those who err in mind will know the truth,
And those who criticize will accept instruction.
Isaiah 29:23, 24
I love that the saved are “the work of His hands.”
I love that in a future day all doubters will see and know.
I love that finally they will stand in awe of God.
What a day!
I am looking ahead to that day! Even so come, Lord Jesus!
Here are two crowns. Two beautiful things people are proud of.
1. The proud crown of the drunkard.
Woe to the proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim,
And to the fading flower of its glorious beauty,
Which is at the head of the fertile valley
Of those who are overcome with wine!
The proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim is trodden under foot.
And the fading flower of its glorious beauty,
Which is at the head of the fertile valley,
Will be like the first-ripe fig prior to summer,
Which one sees, And as soon as it is in his hand, He swallows it.
Isaiah 28:3, 4
And these also reel with wine and stagger from strong drink:
The priest and the prophet reel with strong drink,
They are confused by wine, they stagger from strong drink;
They reel while having visions,
They totter when rendering judgment.
For all the tables are full of filthy vomit, without a single clean place.
Drunkenness is not something to be proud. But people are!
It seems beautiful for a moment and then turns very bad.
Did you see? It is a fading flower of beauty.
Bad for you. Bad for those around you.
2. The Lord of hosts
In that day the LORD of hosts will become a beautiful crown
And a glorious diadem to the remnant of His people;
Therefore thus says the Lord GOD,
"Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone,
A costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed.
He who believes in it will not be disturbed.
The Lord of hosts is a true crown. Beautiful. Not fading.
When you trust in Him, He will never disappoint.
What a good choice. Good for you. Good for those around you.
Choose the Beautiful crown. The Lord!
I, the LORD, am its keeper;
I water it every moment.
So that no one will damage it,
I guard it night and day.
Today I was reminded in this chapter that the Lord is my Keeper.
Yes He was Israel’s Keeper and He is mine. I love that.
Bless our God, O peoples, And sound His praise abroad,
Who keeps us in life And does not allow our feet to slip.
A Song of Ascents.
I will lift up my eyes to the mountains;
From where shall my help come?
My help comes from the LORD,
Who made heaven and earth.
He will not allow your foot to slip;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, He who keeps Israel
Will neither slumber nor sleep.
The LORD is your keeper;
The LORD is your shade on your right hand.
The sun will not smite you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
The LORD will protect you from all evil;
He will keep your soul.
The LORD will guard your going out and your coming in
From this time forth and forever.
The LORD keeps all who love Him,
Well, bless the Lord, the Keeper!
The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace,
Because he trusts in You.
Trust in the LORD forever,
For in GOD the LORD,
we have an everlasting Rock.
Isaiah 26:3, 4
I find that so many doubts and fears in my life are a trust issue. Didn’t I trust Him to save me? Can’t I trust Him now? Yes and Yes! The results of a mind stayed on Him are wonderful. Peace. Trust. I’m rejoicing today that God the Lord is an everlasting Rock who can be trusted!
I’m singing this song.
Like a river glorious is God's perfect peace,
Over all victorious, in its bright increase,
Perfect, yet it floweth fuller every day,
Perfect, yet it groweth deeper all the way.
Stayed upon Jehovah, hearts are fully blest
Finding, as He promised, perfect peace and rest.
Hidden in the hollow of His blessed hand,
Never foe can follow, never traitor stand,
Not a surge of worry, not a shade of care,
Not a blast of hurry touch the spirit there.
Every joy or trial falleth from above,
Traced upon our dial by the Sun of Love,
We may trust Him fully all for us to do,
They who trust Him wholly find Him wholly true.
Francis Ridley Havergal
O LORD, You are my God; I will exalt You,
I will give thanks to Your name;
For You have worked wonders,
Plans formed long ago, with perfect faithfulness.
What plans do they rejoice in? What causes this burst of praise?
From their spot in history, judgment is past, a feast is coming!
The LORD of hosts will prepare a lavish banquet for all peoples on this mountain;
A banquet of aged wine, choice pieces with marrow,
And refined, aged wine.
And on this mountain He will swallow up the covering which is over all peoples,
Even the veil which is stretched over all nations.
He will swallow up death for all time,
And the Lord GOD will wipe tears away from all faces,
And He will remove the reproach of His people from all the earth;
For the LORD has spoken.
And it will be said in that day,
"Behold, this is our God for whom we have waited that He might save us.
This is the LORD for whom we have waited;
Let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation."
I’m waiting for that day too! Imagine the Lord of hosts as the chef. He prepares the lavish banquet. No more death. No more tears. Wow! If you are saved exciting days lie ahead. Wait for it! Wait for Him. Live for Him today!
The earth reels to and fro like a drunkard
And it totters like a shack,
For its transgression is heavy upon it,
And it will fall, never to rise again.
So it will happen in that day,
That the LORD will punish the host of heaven on high,
And the kings of the earth on earth.
They will be gathered together
Like prisoners in the dungeon,
And will be confined in prison;
And after many days they will be punished.
Then the moon will be abashed and the sun ashamed,
For the LORD of hosts will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
And His glory will be before His elders.
Many years ago on this day I was born into God's family. I realized as a young girl that I was a sinner headed for hell, but Jesus died in my place so that I could have eternal life. I believed Him! Reading this chapter today reminded me of what is important. God will judge the world. It’s good to think on these truths. That's the reason I was saved! And now that I know the Lord, I don’t want to live for the world and its things which will be destroyed. I want to live for the God who rules heaven and earth! The One who loves me. The One who has a plan for history. I want to be on His side!
Do not love the world nor the things in the world.
If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For all that is in the world,
the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life,
is not from the Father, but is from the world.
The world is passing away, and also its lusts;
but the one who does the will of God lives forever.
1 John 2:15-17
More than anything I would like to encourage you in your walk with God!
